Join a dynamic team developing software and databases to support real-time monitoring of pathogen variants and answer epidemiological questions. You will contribute to impactful projects at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and evolutionary biology, working closely with public health agencies and scientists worldwide. This is a fixed-term position for one year, starting in June 2026, based in Basel.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Work with software engineers and research scientists to extend an existing database system for viral sequencing data.
  • Design, implement, and test a new scalable database system for bacterial pangenome data based on an existing research prototype.
  • Interact with users and scientists to identify and refine needs and requirements.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary and international teams.

Was du mitbringst

  • Motivation to learn and contribute to public health and genomic epidemiology.
  • Experience with bacterial bioinformatics, especially pangenome data; relevant publications are a plus.
  • Strong Python skills; experience with tools like mypy, black, and ruff is beneficial.
  • Experience with web development, ideally TypeScript and React.
  • Experience developing database engines and understanding of core database properties.
  • C++ experience is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with phylogenetics and (Bayesian) phylodynamics.
  • Master's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Interest in working with interdisciplinary and international teams.
  • Commitment to maintaining an open, inclusive, and positive team environment.
  • Fluency in English; no German required.
