Join a dynamic team working on next-generation distributed intelligence and decision support for large fleets of civil infrastructure assets like bridges, railways, and wind turbines. You will be part of a European network developing decentralized, data-driven frameworks for robust monitoring and condition assessment of critical infrastructure. This position is hosted at ETH Zurich, with opportunities for training and collaboration across leading universities and industry partners in Europe.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Design and prototype modular, low-cost sensor nodes that combine vibration, strain, and environmental sensors with edge AI capabilities.
  • Optimize sensing front-ends, power management, and communication interfaces for low energy use.
  • Implement on-node feature extraction and deploy quantized TinyML models.
  • Enable adaptive sensing and duty-cycling strategies that respond to structural changes.
  • Integrate energy harvesting from multiple sources and dynamic power management for long-term, autonomous operation.
  • Deploy and validate sensor networks on real assets, working with analytics and digital twin systems.
  • Measure improvements in energy, latency, and data rates compared to cloud-based systems.

Was du mitbringst

  • M.Sc. diploma (120 ECTS) or equivalent in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering, geosciences, physics, applied mathematics, computer sciences, or related fields.
  • At the beginning of your research career.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills in numerical analysis, programming, and high-performance computing.
  • Skills in dynamics, structural health monitoring, data analysis, and modeling.
  • Interest in laboratory-based experiments and engineering applications.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Willingness to present at international conferences and spend time working with project collaborators at partner universities.
  • Not have been awarded a PhD and not have resided or worked in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
