Join a multi-year research project focused on detecting, locating, and understanding explosion events in underground ammunition storage facilities. Work closely with leading experts at ETH Zurich, armasuisse, and industry partners to advance monitoring and alert systems for underground infrastructure. This project combines experimental fieldwork, advanced sensor technology, and algorithm development in a collaborative and applied research setting.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Design and analyze controlled test explosions in underground laboratories
  • Evaluate seismic sensors, including seismometers and distributed acoustic sensing technology
  • Help design and install a multi-sensor monitoring network in test facilities
  • Define optimal sensor geometry and participate in field installations
  • Calibrate velocity models and ensure quality control of data acquisition
  • Integrate multi-sensor data streams into seismological software frameworks
  • Model wave propagation in complex 3D underground spaces
  • Develop and optimize algorithms for event detection, high-precision localization, and event characterization
  • Contribute to real-time alarm system implementation
  • Optimize cost-effective sensor layouts and monitoring concepts
  • Collaborate with engineering companies, Swiss Armed Forces, armasuisse, and international partners

Was du mitbringst

  • MSc degree in Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and programming skills (Python required)
  • Experience with seismic data processing or wave propagation modeling is a plus
  • Willingness to participate in field campaigns in underground facilities
  • Interest in field experiments and applied research
  • Motivation for practical and efficient project work
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented environment
  • Strong communication skills, ideally in German and English
