Join a research group at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (IAC) and work on a Swiss National Science Foundation funded project. You will use numerical modeling to study severe thunderstorms in mountain regions, focusing on how topography and climate change affect hail and wind gusts. The project includes working with partners like MeteoSwiss, Pennsylvania State University, and the European Severe Storms Laboratory. You will have the chance to visit project partners abroad and take part in a field campaign. The position starts between May 1st and September 1st.

Deine Aufgaben

  • Carry out independent research to find out what causes severe thunderstorms in mountains using high-resolution modeling
  • Analyze observational data to find typical thunderstorm events
  • Analyze climate model data to see changes in thunderstorm environments
  • Set up and run numerical model experiments (ICON) to study the effects of topography and climate change
  • Work together with international project partners to share data and modeling results
  • Present your scientific findings at conferences and to the public
  • Write articles for peer-reviewed journals

Was du mitbringst

  • Master’s degree in meteorology, climate science, physics or a similar field
  • Experience in programming for data analysis and visualization
  • Experience with severe thunderstorm dynamics or numerical modeling is a plus
  • Familiarity with Linux on HPC clusters is helpful
  • Programming experience in Python is desired
  • Interest in extreme weather events
